I've always heard that most of the Ford V8's had their cam timing retarded back in the 70's, the Clevelands especially. And if it was, this one had to have been done by altering the lobe centers on the cam. It's definately a 72 motor and has all the original parts there.
if so, how does it change the timing when you replace the gear set with the older ones. When my brother built his 460 one of the things (they) say to do is change the gear set to a early 429 set to get the cam timing back to center or straight up......if it was cut into the cams the gear sets would all be the same.

I just went back and dug up what Pat Ganahl wrote about the Cleveland in Ford Performance and he said the 72 cams were ground 4* retarded, to advance it, he suggested a timing set with a multi indexed crank gear and install it to where the cam is advanced 4*(making it running "straight up"). He dittos that in the 460 section. Their cams were also ground with a retard. Same timing set fits both the 335 and 385 series.
Somebody's wrong then somewhere. The set on this 351 has both marks in line with the crank key and cam pin. I might have time later today to get a pic.
