ALRIGHT NOW WhAT

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 08-Jul-02 AT 03:34 PM (EST)] alright, my truck has always sounded like its been misssing a cylinder every now and then , nothing that would indicate that it was just one cylinder or anything just every now and then it would miss, at all engine speeds, well this weekend it got a hella lot worse . so i bought a new coil thinking that maybe a week spark would be to blame

not true... ... so i took the whole ignition system apart (coil, cap, rotor, wires, plugs) and checked em all, (except wires) did a compresiion check and all cylinders were w/in 15%, I know that it should be w/in 10% but i got 300k on this engine... anyways i just wanted to know if anyone else has had this problem, i dont have a cat or muffler (trying to eleminate possible problems) now i am stuck on either the wires (going to get new ones today) or ignitions modual (which tested good like 2 mo. ago) or somthing w/ the polution system, which i took off the smog pump along time ago (wasnt even connected)

plz help me out any sugestions i gonna shoot this truck

I would be suspect of the EGR or the vaccum source!

I would bet EGR. since you don't live where you have to pass smog tests, just do away with it.

if you do a search on this form there is a thread about blocking it off. this would be your best bet.

if you want to test to see if this is the culprit all you have to do is unplugg the green vacuume line going to it and then test drive it.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 08-Jul-02 AT 10:52 PM (EST)]Well thnx guys........

I guess the thing just gave up...

after a few hours of testing...... i narrowed it down to the number 3 cylinder...

Cant be anything, new plugs, new wire, new rotor, new cap, new coil... onlything that isnt new is the egintion modual... which as i said tested good... errr i mad... #3 is all dead... and to further my belief, i did plug the egr spacer w/ a brass fitting and teflon tape, and did nothing... o well... no biggie...Thnx to the low gearing i have i cant even drive it... unless i drive from red line to red line and to tell the truth it sounds like #####, and i dont want it to explode... guess 310,000 miles and a teen driver is just way to much to ask for an engine...

o yeah on my compression test i got 160-170 from all cylinders except stupid # 3 which gave me like 130...

thnx guys

My first thought was your plug wire. Guess you elimated that chance. Craked / blown head gasket?...check the oil for water and the coolant for oil. Another thought may be a rocker nut has worked off the stud or a broken push rod. After checking those I'd suspect a cracked piston.
