Checking Codes with a paperclip?

Hi all,

I got a '93 F-150 with a 300. Can someone explain how to check the codes with a paperclip? I knew how to do it on my old car but the ports are different on this. My old one had two rowsof ports this one has one. I tried searching but nothing useful came up.

Also, I dont have a Hayne's or Chilton's manual so can someone tell me or give a link to what all the codes mean? I'm not having any problems (knock on wood) but i would like to know how for any future mishaps.

Thanks in advance!
-Ryan

So all i need is a long wire to ground the STI to the negative battery cable? What about the ports that are on the bottom of the dash?

in a 93 you do not have ports inside the cab.

you use a paper clip or a short wire.

follow the diagram on website.

i prefer to use a code reader, way less hassle.

Huh, interesting. Cuz I got some ports below the dash! Haha I was just assuming those were for the computer. Hell I have no idea now.

No those are not the ports you use for pulling codes. Sorry I just checked the link that I posted earlier and that is for the KOER test. No wonder you're confused

Here's the correct page:
http://fordfuelinjection.com/?p=13

That should clear up the confusion.

So the only part I have to do is put a wire from the STI to the Neg. battery terminal then? And turn key to on and read the codes that flash, right? I just want to make sure I completely understand before I go and do it. Dont wanna screw something up, you know?

Just out of curiousity, what ARE those ports under the dash for? Im used to my '67 F-100, so I never had to deal with computer stuff.

Yes it appears that way. I've never done it the manual way, I use a $30 code reader.

I did. And if you'll notice steps 1 and 2 were cut off for some reason. Step 2 and 3 seem to go together to me. Just wanted to make sure that was all. It shows a picture of another plug with the STO, SIG-RTN and fuel pump and I wasnt sure if that applied or not. I aploogize for being newbie to engine computer stuff and not knowing what every abbreviation stands for.

No no!! Sorry dude! Haha, I didn't mean to come off as a jerk. I read the guidelines real quick and saw that it made mention of two different connections so then I posted my first comment....

Then I read it again and as you said, it appears that they repeat the same step twice!! WTF?! Lol. Anywho, Here's another tutorial that shows you must actually jump the #2 pin to the STI.

http://myshifter.com/joel50/EECTEST.html

This sounds more accurate since most people say this test can be done with a paper clip. Good luck dude.

You can pick up a cheap OBD-I code reader at most local auto parts stores. Here's the one I have and it works great:

Thats what I do, as opposed to the paperclip or cheapo code reader metods. I had a STAR (the Ford code reader that the dealerships used to use) but it was as useless as ***** on a bull, so I got rid of it. When you turn th key ON then ground the STI some relays click, you get the hard codes, then you get the continuous memory codes with a seperator blink between. Don't worry about messing something up, because you can't. The worst that can happen is you won't understand the codes or you wont get the codes at all....as long as all you connect electrically is battery negative and the STI.

I have those too, and at first I was confused about them just as you are as far as thinking they were for pulling codes. I have no idea what they are, but they appear to be part of the body harness so that would mean that they are in no way associated with the computer and the codes. For OBD2 the DATA LINK CONNECTOR is under that dash and it is used for connecting a scan tool for reading codes, data etc.
