Garmin and magellan are two I am a little familar with. I see the voice and three dimensional views are getting more affordable. Larger screen size would also be important to me. I don't want to try to see small print while driving. Not that one should be looking at anything but the road when driving. You know what I mean.
I'm going to move this to the Audio, Video, and Nav Forum. I think there will be more hits there...
For me, I've got the Alpine IVA-W205 double din head unit with the Alpine PMD-B200 Blackbird nav unit that can go behind the face of the 205 and be controlled by it. It has done a great job so far, but be ready for sticker shock when you see the price they will go for. I am using it because I have the same head units in all of my vehicles, so it makes it easy to go from one to the other and have the controls on the head unit itself.
I just bought a Magellan Maestro 4000 to give to my father for Christmas. I pulled the unit out of the box and looked at it. Seems to be pretty good. Larger screen, easy mounting.
I'm a huge fan of Pioneer's nav units. I've had the AVIC-N1 in my truck for about 5 years now and love it. Pioneer's customer service has even been easy to deal with, and forgiving for that matter. I've been having some issues with my nav antenna and the replacement they sent me 5 months ago (only a 90 day warranty) just went bad again but they still sent me out a new one....

I agree, have you seen the AVICZ2 yet? I was told (couple months ago) it was the newest tech from Pioneer....Paid about 2k for it installed, all touch screen, bluetooth, backup camera, Ipod, mp3, you can store jpegs in the hardrive....im still learning what this thing can do! In a strange area? need to know where a diesel station is? MAC machine? resturant? hotel? just touch a button, and it will list names and phone numbers from nearest to farthest from your exact location...I would never go into Manhattan b4 I bought this unit...now I can drive thru the city with confidence. dont know how I lived without it....

Yeah, definitely a nice unit. Mine has all those capabilities except the bluetooth (although I didn't buy the backup camera). I moved to PA from AZ and would've been completely lost out here without it. The roads in AZ are like a grid, easy to find and labeled nicely. Out here though, you'll be lucky to see a street sign and the roads look like a pile of pasta... Other nav units are available that are much cheaper but the amount of data and features you get on the Pioneer units is worth every penny.
