Remote Starter

I called my dealer and the price is $399. I can buy one at auto parts store for $69(even cheaper when on sale). A friend installs these and put one in my g/f's car last week. So, install is free. Ford's price is outrageous. It's a starter only, no alarm or locks because I already have that. If I go with the aftermarket will there be warranty issues? Any other suggestions?

Other than getting the kit to by-pass the PATS system... you should be good to go..
I know the by-passes can go anywhere from $30-$75.

Unless the dealer or Ford can directly link the rem. starter to a future vehicle issue, the warranty shouldn't be a problem either.

Remember cheaper is not always better. You get what you pay for.

I had one, a Crimestopper unit, installed last spring at the dealer; cost was about $250. No problems. The other day in a local paper was a story about a car fire that burned the entire car in a garage. Totally destroyed. Cause? A remote starter that was installed by an amateur who cross wired the system....it was installed that day.

I've heard lots of those stories too. My bud is not an amateur, trust me. It's his job. The unit I'm looking at is also one of the most common out there with no known issues. I know cheaper is not always better but come on! $400 compared to $69 is a bit much. I don't mind paying extra for quality and I almost always do, but what am I getting for the extra $330 here?

Have you checked w/your friend to see if he can get a better deal (at wholesale)? Your still looking close to 100bux if not more including the PATS by-pass interface. But its still "better" than the original price quoted from the dealer.

I'm not sure if they are all like mine, but when they installed the PATS by pass, one of my keys is required to remain in the bypass interface. It is an alarm as well as auto start.

Crimestopper is the brand I install at work , very good quality, viper is also a good brand ,plus many others ,the cheaper units have poor quality contacts on the relays , on the units with the on board relays the contacts sometimes pitt and stick shut ,cheaper quality ! , Craig.

It depends on how you want to bypass the PATS. They have them like you have, where the key stays in place, or they have them that you can program. Personally, when I used to install, I preferred the key in place ones and used that on my truck. I had a number of issues with the ones you had to program and didnt retain a key.
