I had a '97 F150 XLT Off Road 4X4 Regular cab with the 4.6 and never had any engine problems but it seemed like it was one issue after another with transmission, electrical and the sliding back window always leaking! I know it was the first year of the model change and they had bugs to work out but I got so aggravated spending my days off at the dealer. I now have a 2003 and never have had an issue.

Yeah some 97 probably had some bugs but there are sure a lot out there that are good and bug free

The only problems I had with my 98 in the 9 years I've had it were the AC compressor cracking and leaking when it hit 47 deg below F (actual temp and still started without being plugged in) and the classic cylinder misfire from getting a little over zealous washing my engine. Oh, and a couple dash light bulbs. Not bad for 9 years and 130,000 miles.
