When I was given my 97 explorer I was told there is an aftermarket keyless remote system installed but doesn't work. I tried the key fob and they are right, it doesn't work. I have looked for the module but can't find it - perhaps it's under the dash?
The reason I think I'd like to remove it is that when autolocking/unlocking there will be one door lock (random one each time) that fires 4 times either to unlock or lock. The others just fire once.
Secondly, (probably related to the multiple firing of locks) my drivers side door won't unlock sometimes either manually or electrically. It's like something gets mechanically stuck. If I turn the lock with my key and also fire the electric unlock it usually will come unstuck. Almost like a lever is worn and if you play with it enough it will eventually pop.
Is something worn or broken or what? Is there any way to turn off factory ford auto locking/unlocking so they don't wear out as fast?
I lubed it up and it's still working erratically. After examining it in the dark (couldn't find a flashlight) and feeling as best I can it appears that the mechanism is just worn out and is loose causing the random jams and malfunctions. It doesn't appear there's anything to tighten but maybe I'm wrong. The light will reveal more I suppose. I suppose it's best to just replace to whole mechanism.
