Next cold start use a screw driver and cross out the 2 big terminals on the GPR, Glow Plug Relay, for 30-60 seconds, jump in the truck and start it. If it fires up OK then you need a GPR. DO NOT USE A STARTER SOLENOID. It will fail. Get a MR99 from autozone or GPR109 from NAPA.

BTW: There is a block heater that can be plugged into a 115VAC wall outlet. It takes about 3 hours to warm the engine from dead cold. Most here use a timer so the truck is nice and toasty in the morning for work.

I have never once started my truck with the block heater. With a properly functioning GP system it should start fine down to the single digits.

I would not recomend the napa gpr-109 because I have replaced mine 3 times last winter under napas 1 year warranty and guess what its getting cold and this one isnt working. (click here) I would try this out if I were you.

Also did you use motorcraft glow plugs? They can be bought from autozone for less that $10 a piece. Many members here dont recomend the use of autolites or other aftermarket brands.

Also what motor oil are you using? If its really cold where you are it might be a good idea to switch to a lighter weight oil.

Yeas they where motorcraft. I wised up to that after reading what you guys had to say about autolite and what not. The ones that where in there where brand new oh well.

What napa calls there gpr is just a rebuilt heavy starter solenoid and can not take that much power. They will burn up and you will be replaceing them often. Like Foreman said.....I tried the same rout bc they were cheaper. Best to just buy the GPR from the stealership!

Here's a thought: put the truck in the hot tub so she can be cozy all night. Show her you love her. LOL
