Will an early 240 bolt up to a later 5 speed manual? I would like to drive faster than 50 mph without hurting gas mileage. I don't know what clutch I have, but I do know it is a direct linkage type.
My '67 240 with the three speed and a 1 barrel carb got 20 mpg and ran 85 mph no problem. Dropped in a '77 300 and got more power, used the intake, exhaust and tranny from the 240 and still got 20 mpg.
Wish I had it today! My '91 EFI 300 will get 17 mpg if I loose the topper and running boards off the F250 4X4 with the ZF tranny. But it averages 14.5 and never any worst than 12mpg. Will get 12 when I am towing into a 25 to 30 mph wind. But I will say, that I recently plugged the lines to the EGR valve and it has a bunch more power and is smoother now. Might help the milage when towing.
