I own a 1988 f-150 xlt lariat, 302, AOD. I don't see anything on the engine to suggest this has a high output motor. Is it possible to change parts and get a high output rating?
Just wondering because this engine is TIGHT. Runs beautifully. I know there are ways to increase HP thru air intake and exhaust modifications as well as performance modules.
I just want to know what I could do to turn this engine, that I already have, into a high output 302 that I could then add these aforementioned performance parts to.
Different cam/different heads, if I'm not mistaken. I'm pretty sure certain years got forged internals. But there was never an HO in the trucks, only in the mustang. You could still use the parts to "make" an HO but you'd get better performance from aftermarket parts.
its not worth it to make the 302 into a HO. The HO is a high revving engine which would not be good for a truck. Your better off finding a 351 from a lightning or something to that effect
The HO is differentiated from the regular 5.0 and the truck 5.0 by a unique intake and camshaft. It also had forged pistons for some years but that doesn't affect power output. Everything else is the same as any other 5.0, including the block, heads and rotating assembly. There's nothing stopping you from bolting on the HO intake and swapping in the HO cam, the parts will fit and the result will be a 5.0HO. But this engine was designed for a car so it's powerband is less than ideal for a truck.

so now that i'm reading this thread i'm regretting that i bought a HO motor. it was a rebuilt 302 with flat tops...... slight cam and HO. my truck is an 88 f-150. i just swapped the long block out with my old long block. in essence i switched the timing order but that's it. and it's running but i haven't got it totally in time yet. is there anything else i would need to do? ecm mods? i'm not that up to date on them? thanks alot fellas
YES! I say it runs. It has took me 2 days to figure out how to respond with out curse words because i don't wanna upset anyone. what i was trying to ask and not looking for a smart *** answer back was if any one knew if putting a 302 ho into a regular speed density 302 powered truck if there was anything special other than changing the order of the spark plugs. and to add the the what isn't right about it yet i haven't got the motor into time yet. just because it starts doesn't mean it's good. i'm not an expert but i have started more than one motor that wasn't right but yet it started? correct me if i'm wrong. don't mean to get hostile hear but i feel like some one thinks just idiots need to ask questions and want help. so now that i have got it outta my system again does any one know if there is anything i need to change such as reprogram the ecm or anything like that? thanks again guys for all the help.
real good way to over react there skooter. he asked "You say it runs, what about it isn't right yet?" which to me sounds...u say it runs, but what doesnt seem right about it that would make u think it isnt running right"
and in my first post i said i hadn't gotten it in time yet. how would i know if anything else was wrong with out it being in time. it's so far out it doesn't have enough power to pull it's self at over 3000 rpm. and in my second reply i made clear all i wanted to know was if any one had any info on doing a swap like this. sorry to have "over reacted"
it'll run but feel so down on power and will possibly backfire like crazy.
when i switched engines in my truck at school a fellow classmate "set my distrubtor in right" but it was 180* off. well, it started and idled but ran like someone was strangling it.
that would make sense some what. i'm gonna try turning it just one tooth in the direction it needs because on a timing light it shows to be 10 degrees the wrong direction so needs to go 20degrees the other way but if that's the case i'll have to turn it one tooth cause i'm out of turn. do you know the best was to find cylinder one on tdc?
