Hi, Guys I have a question about my buddies 89' f-350 with a 7.3L IDI N/A. It hasn't ran in about 4 years, and we cleaned it up a bit and turned it over and the glow plugs ran a cycle so i think they are workin, but i am gonna run a manual switch anyway. Anyway the engine felt like it wanted to start, but it didn't. One of the injectors leeks at the top so i know it was getting fuel. And i think it has enough compression, because it barely turned over with 2-950 cranking amp batteries from my truck, fully charged, each with a battery jumper attatched. I think putting in a manual switch for the glow plugs will do the trick but i don't know, any thoughts?
The solid state system is best left alone to operate as designed.
When trying to start it were you shutting off the ignition and starting from scratch each time it missed starting..... this allows the GP to cycle each start attempt.
Sounds like the starter is fubar/too slow...... use the block heater for a couple hours to help with starting......
Cranking the starter for more than 20 seconds without a 2 minute cool down period between attemps will cook your starter.
Once you see magic white smoke from the starter it is dead.
The white smoke is magic,
Why you say, because once you see it, 300+ dollars vanish from your wallet.
Did you drain the fuel tank and lines and put fresh fuel in , new fuel filter and re prime the thing? If it's been sitting 4 years, there's a good chance that there's an algae party going on in the old fuel. It can clog up the works in a heartbeat. Stored diesel grows algae like you wouldn't believe. Nasty stuff to get cleaned out.
