Heating Up or Not!

I have 1996 F-150 4x4 with a 300 6, 5 speed, air conditioning. I've never had a bit of trouble with it before. Last weekend I was pulling our boat back from the lake, when I noticed that the heat gauge had gone up to the "a" on normal. I got her home, no boiling over, no signs of excessive heat. Figured what the heck, I would change out the thermostat. Replaced it, now the heat gauge sits constantly between the "m" and "l". Still doesn't seem to overheat, but it bugs a person. I was told to check the temp with a meat thermometer. I took the cap off and stuck the thermometer in and ran it for over a 1/2 hour. Nothing, didn't get above 120 with the air conditioner on. Got in a revved it up for several minutes, next thing I know, it gushes out about a gallon and a half of coolant onto the ground. I've never had one do this before, thermometer said it was about 200 degrees. So I still don't know if it's heating up or not.....Ford garage told me they would pressure check the system, check the water pump, the works for 200 dollars

Thanks

the gushing that you are refering to is when the thermostat opened. once it opened the water pump pumped water into the rad. and since there was no lid on it the water just pumped out.

this is a sign of a good water pump.

what temp. thermostst did you replace it with?

also might want to check your fan clutch. the fan should turn free when the motor is cold but after it gets hot it should not turn. or at least be pretty stiff to turn.

It had 192 on it. I would assume that meant it was 192 degrees. I talked to Ford and they said this was the proper thermostat for it.

Just went though this with my 1994, check to make sure the radiator isn't plugged. Mine was plugged from the bottom up about 8"

$200 is kinda stiff, just for a diagnosis - in my opinion. Take it into a shop and have the radiator flushed. Check the fan clutch for proper operation.

I replaced the radiator in my 87 E-150 and it still went to the high side of normal in stop, sit and go traffic in Sacramento (HOT CITY).
I then replaced the fan thermo clutch and things got much cooler.
