I'm modifying a 4.9L for my truck. I'm using the Offy intake, Dynomax headers, and a Crane Powermax 260/272 cam. I was going to put on a Holley 390 but have heard a lot about it being too small. So now I might go with the Edelbrock 500. A friend of mine runs a 600 Edelbrock on his 4.9L but complains of a big low-end loss. Has anyone used either of these carbs? Or are there maybe other combos that might work better? Thanks - BUBBA
I just did mine with the Crane 260, Offy DP intake and Holley 390. I am pulling a 2800 lb travel trailer and I'm really happy with my choices. I have heard so much about headers and sealing problems that I went with the later model split-manifolds and had the local muffler shop fab up the collector and put all new 2.25 inch pipe from the collector to the rear bumper. It sounds a little funny when you put your foot in it, the "angry bees in a tin can" thing, but I can live with it. The driveability is excellent, I'm still breaking it in so I can't completely say it is 100% and the Holley is giving me a little trouble dialing it in but to this point I am very impressed.
By the way, all of my research was at this site and inliners.org, and I followed the most common pieces of advice I got from both sources.
I didn't do this as a hot-rod project, I wanted reliability, some added power and a clean rebuild. As far as I can tell right now, I got it all, and then some.
