The 4x4 requires a rear sump pan because of the cross member.
The oil pan on a 4x2 is located at the front so the drain hole and pan clearance are comprised on 4x4.
Rear sump oil pan and Rear sump oil pump pickup are required.

All the 1975/91 Econolines use a rear sump pan and pickup tube.
Engines used: 300 I-6, 302 (first offered in 1979), 351W, 351M/400 (1980/82 only), 460.

weren't all pickemup trucks after 83 rear sump? Snag the power steering bracket and saginaw pump off of the van too, so that you are assured clearance at your steering pump.

And just for reference, the rear sump pan on the 80's trucks will fit ok in a 2wd, just don't nail a big bump at speed. I've been running a rear sump pan for about 4 years now in a 2wd. It's also much easier and neater to change the oil than on the front sump pan.
