For the 65 Merc line I recall the following VIN engine code:
H = 390 2v w/C6 trans
P = 390 4v Police
Y = 390 2v manual trans
Z = 390 4v
R = 427 8v
The 410 and 428 came in in the 66+ years

LOL same project.. I'm going to tear into it this week for sure.. Think we'll drian the oil for inspection before going much further. Need to get the tranny off the back and start pulling parts off the front so we can get a look inside.
