I don't lock the doors when I'm driving, but I always lock my doors when I park because of this story:

There is a seedy little tavern just across the field from my grandparent's house. There was also an older lady in the neighborhood who liked to get drunk quite often. Well, one night my Dad parked his new Firebird in the yard without locking the doors. Sure enough, that night the old lady got totally smashed, walked down the road to the house, wandered over to the Firebird, and got in. She sat in there waiting for someone to give her a ride home. That would not have been so bad, except this particular old lady had a habit of pissing herself when she was extra drunk. Fortunately, my Grandpa saw her in there before she lost control of her bodily functions, and got her out. But it was a close call nonetheless.

So that's where my grandma went when she ran off several years back...

I always lock my doors out of habit. It's one of those "just-in-case" things.

Our vehicles are in Auto-lock mod. As we have three daughters... we have always tried to make them aware of their vulnerability when sitting in traffic or stopped at a red light. Safety is much more important than inconvenience.

If I ever get to TN in my lifetime, I'm going to look you up and buy you a drink or 6. With all the entertainment you provide here, it's the least I could do.

Cheers,

Well, I am like most guys here, right at 6'2" 230 pounds so for the passed almost 40 years locking myself in the vehicle never entered my mind. That notion has changed now...

My wife has a Jeep Cherokee that auto locks all the doors when the car gets up to 15 miles am hour, I always feel better about that. ...

About two months ago at 5:00 am I was sitting in the median waiting to turn left in to my employers gates. I see a 20 something girl walking up the inbound lane on the median towards me. Just as I get ready to make my turn," WHAM" this gal is sitting in my passenger seat beside of me...

She says to me, "Are you going by 7th street ? " I said NO, I am turning in here at these gates. She said " Oh, I thought you were sitting here waiting to give me a ride. She got out and kept walking...

It took me about a hour to grasp what had just happened. It worked out o.k. and this is the first time anything like that has happened to me, I was lucky. She could have needed some drug money, and robbed me. My doors stay locked now whenever I am in the city driving..

That's about what I figured. Although it is mating season for some farm animals so I thought maybe you were busy there too.

To stay on topic, if I ever drive through Greeneville, TN, you can be guarandamnteed I'll be locking my doors.....especially if I hear banjoes.

You only gotta worry about that if you're in a canoe. Most hillbillies can't run fast enough to catch a car. It's a widely known fact.

Something similar happened to me awhile back. I had just got back in my truck when a kid of about 16 comes running up looking scared to death and just jumps in the passenger side and got down in the floorboard where he couldn't be seen from outside. I looked at him and said what the hell do you think you're doing? He throws a hundred dollar bill on the seat and says Please get me out of here...there's some guys trying to kill me. I started driving, and was thinking to myself, what the hell am I doing...I've got to be the stupidest SOB alive. I drove a couple miles and he said this should be good, so I stopped and he got out...I gave him his money back too.

Nah, you don't have to worry if you hear banjos...It's when they stop that you should start to worry...
