The neighbor has a 1994 7.3 IDI with a dump body. The dump body is really heavy so the truck is always under a load. It was a State dept of transportation vehicle. Ive replaced everything in the cooling system and he is still thinking that it gets to hot. The hottest that ive seen it is around 225 and that was after it was ran wide open for about 15 miles. If you dont run it wide open it never gets above 215.
Everyone that owns an IDI please list how hot your trucks run.
I can't imagine a 4000 pound dump body. mine will get hotter pulling long hills back off throttle and sometimes drop out of overdrive same with any diesel I have manuel guages though
Mine runs with a light load around 195 or 200. Under load I've seen it at 215-220, but I measure it as it leave the head in the back of the engine, not leaving the radiator.
I have my mechanical guage in the head where the idiot light switch used to be.
Hammer down up a big hill with a load, 230 or so.
Goes back to 195 as soon as I top the hill.
Hammer down hard with an empty bed up a big hill, 235 or so, but it drops as soon as I let off the throttle.
Part of the dump bed seeming heavy is the extra wind it catches.
Mine is a dump also.

That sounds almost exactly the same situation that we are deling with. I dont know what the dump body weighs, but its one heavy load by itself. I would think that as long as he doesnt reach boiling point he will be ok. The other thing that I remind him of is that while most people put the pedal to the floor, that Ford probably recommends a much slower pace. Do you know how much your dump body weighs?
My truck is a 4x4 and the lite weight is 8000 pounds without me in the truck.
Mine is probably lighter as even though it has a dump subframe, I have a flat bed mounted on the subframe.
The bed is about 800 pounds.
The subframe is about 400 pounds.
The lift cylinder and arm is to heavy for two men to pick up, so I am going to guess about 600 pounds.
And the electric over hydraulic tank and pump are about 100 pounds full of fluid.
I guess that is close to 1900 pounds when you add it all up.

At first I thought that I was overshooting at 4000Lbs, but after seeing yours I wouldnt doubt if my neighbors does weigh 4K. Its much heavier and and much bulkier.
I would say it is not much heavier, I know the one you are talking about.
That is a 8 x 9 foot bed, the only difference is the sides and cab protector.
I would guess under 3000 pounds.
That bed has had 9700 pounds of rock on it more than once.
