hi all. i have a 1990 f150 auto with 3.55 gears. im running 35 in tires and am thinking of going to 4.10 or 4.56 . do i have to replace both front and rear carriers? i have the 8.8 in rear and the d44 up front.thanks.
You only need to replace the front carrier when crossing the gear threshold around 3.73, the rear carrier should be reusable as long as you (or the tech) don't break it when you (they) remove it... Like they did with mine

On an 8.8 the carrier has nothing to do with the gear ratio, you just need a ring and pinion set. If you want a posi or a locker or whatever, then thats a different story.
If you have open diffs now and do some off pavement runs, you might as well change the carriers to traction devices while it is opened up ( and if you have the money to do so).
I looked at a catalog and there are different carriers for the D44
This is not the final word on carriers - just some insight - I know some carriers have to be changed because the pinion is too small meet up with the ring. May not be the case for open diffs.
Knowing what your diff requires in VERY good knowledge, Letting the shop know that you know what you are talking about, lets them know you know your stuff. Make sense?
4.56 sounds right - what engine?
