I am thinking of buying an 85 F-250 that originally had a 300-6 in it. Right now it has no motor. It is a 4-speed and 4 wheeldrive. I would like to know what V-8 blocks this motor would also match up to? Eventually, I would like to put a diesel in it, if I do buy it. Any info on this would be appreciated as I don't know which motors match up to what others. My other Ford is a '76 F-150 with a 390 automatic and I am thinking of upgrading to at least a 3/4 ton and the price is right on the F-250 I am looking at. Thanks
Small blocks use the same bell housing but if you go with a v8 you will need to swap the motor mounts on the frame and get a new radiator because the hoses are on the wrong side pluse othe stuff if you do the swap get a donor truck
i've heard that for the engine swap, there was a problem w/ the 351's
...i have a 81 f150 w/ a 300 and a 4 spd and am also interested in putting in a v8 and a diesel some day, but for now i'm pursuing a 351...i was told that a windsor engine will bolt put to the 4spd but the cleveland will not, and i haven't heard anything about modifieds, has anyone out there ever heard anything on this?
A 351 cleveland will bolt to a 300 bellhousing, but this engine was never offered in these body style trucks, so it's not a complete bolt in.
A 351m will not bolt to a 300 bellhousing. The 351m has the 429/460 bellhousing pattern. But get a different bellhousing, and the 351m will fit since it was offered in these trucks.
The other poster is correct, anytime you put a v8 in place of a 300, you have grind the motor mount perch brackets off the crossmember, and bolt v8 ones in place.
If you are contemplating a diesel, I would keep my eye open, and when the opportunity arises, buy a whole diesel truck. If the body on this truck is good, then you can swap the body over if the diesel's body is rough. There are enough differences in a diesel to where it would be cheaper to get the whole truck with the diesel already in it.
