After a rebuild, what are the most important things one can do to eeek out more HP out of an Inline-6? Must be totally reliable and low maintenance, and reasonably inexpensive.
I've found that a "slight" RV cam is pretty good. Of coarse it is always good to have a free flowing exaust, 2 1/2" or better high flow cat that kind of stuff. Try ignition, coil, cap and wires maybe a box later. Hope it helps.
Intake and Carb, that all depends on you budget. Also do you have to stay smog legal? If you have to stay smog legal the only things you can mess with are the things I mentioned. If not then intake, carb, header with a cam your good to go, but then there goes your budget. I think if you can get a bigger exaust and fool around with your ignition you will find a big difference with power. Also depending on where You are in the rebuild there are a few things you can do. Have the head shaved to get higher compression (granted its not a big jump but it is something) Roller rockers can free up some horsepower (again budget). Is this adayly driver? If so then you probly don't want to get to radical. Hope this helps.
Dynomax recommmends the 3inch exhaust for a single pipe. And your stock carter is to restrictive for power. Offenhauser makes a 4v and then slap on a edelbrock 4v for some alot better breathing. Then a good header and that would fix all your breathing problems.
Check comp and crane out for a good cam. and like mentioned a good aftermarket ignition like the MSD 6A.
