What year is the truck to start with?

Hmm, I think 73 was the last year for the 240, but, there isn't really a good external way to tell the 240 and 300 apart. The 240 has a short water pump and harmonic balancer(bolt head sticks out past the front of the balancer, where a 300's doesn't) but, that's about it. You could measure the stroke(300's is 3.98" where a 240's is 3.18".)
