I recently picked up a 1992 F-150. The temperature needle never lifted off the cold pin and there was no heat. I replaced the heater core and installed a thermometer (some previous owner pulled it out and decided against replacing it!).
Now the temperature gauge works and the needle sits comfortably between the "R" and the "M" in NORMAL. The heat only works on high, so I'm guessing that that is going to require a new blower. The bigger problem is that the heat is warm, but not hot. Maybe that's just how these old trucks are, but I don't see this being able to defrost a windshield too well.
Anyone have suggestions for the remedy? Thanks in advance.
Does the blower only work on high ? If it does it probably needs a new resistor - cheap and easy to change. Just make sure you get a new plug for it as they usually are rusted pretty sodid. My 92 F-250 puts out a lot of heat but the floor plenum doesn't work properly but I get lots of heat from the vent setting or defrost.
The resistor is the most common failure of High Fan, but sometimes the switches go bad too... Remember the A/C blows on the DEF & HI/LOW positions... So it may take a few miles to get the core up to temp... My F350 will melt the windshield as well...
Also, check the DEF actuator... RED & YELLOW lines if I remember...
They also had a tendency to break the plastic pin that held it into the door...
good luck with the fix.just got my 95 4x4 back from shop 1st was overheating so they replaced fan clutch/radiator then my air cond. quit, got it fixed then my heater was acting up,no heat. now that winters almost here they fixed it. and i got it back, now my speedometer and odometer quit again.my luck sucks but i still like this truck better than my95 dodge 4x4its practicly everything all new now.shortblock, tranny, front end,.ill never stray from ford again.my dodge was in the shop constantly.my wife even drove her saterday 1st truck she says she liked in 5 years since my toyota.
