The cruise control on The Redneck isn't working properly. When I try to use it, it floors the gas and doesn't let up until I step on the brakes, or press the off button. Any ideas where I should start looking to resolve this?
I should mention that all other systems (except blower motor) appear to be working properly.
This is an 89 F150 XLT Lariat, 4X4, 5.0 EFI, Auto trans
Thanks in advance

You did not mention if your speedometer is working or not. If not, check the drive gear & cable - repair/replace as necessary. If it is, check the sensor that is part of the cable assembly. This is how the cruise determines at what level to hold the throttle open. Not receiving a signal would tell it to just keep the trottle open in [a futile] effort to reach speed - repair/replace as necessary.
The recall to which you may be referring involves the later electronic system; first used in F-Series/Bronco for the '93 model year. Your '89 would have still had the electro-mechanical/servo system.
Did the 89 have a cable drive gear, or electronic speedo? Not sure when the VSS was added to the dif, but my '86 Bird has an electronic speedo with the sensor in the tranny. Is it possible the 89 has the same setup?
What he said, though. Is the speedo working? If not, there's your answer. Probably have a bad connection on the VSS (be it on the pumpkin or in the tranny tail), or the sensor's gone kaput. Turning on wide open indicates missing speed feedback.
It appears to be a cable driven speedo, and it's working properly. Donner, Where is this sensor you mentioned? is it at the tranny or speedo side.
Thanks for the info so far, I'd really like to figure this out before my trip next month.

Just wait until the off button floors the gas....>_<
I have an '88 (manual 5 spd inline 6). When I got it in sept '06 the cruise worked all except for the coast button. Push or hold coast button and it takes off like it's mad at me (it's not like I threatened to replace it with the old escort or anything... ).
At any rate... the other day I'm going down the interstate at a balmy 65mph and I press the off button...next thing I know I'm pinned back in the seat and almost to 75 before I get my foot to the brake.
Until I fix it...I'm not touching it. Someone did mention in a previous post that it could be a bad blocking diode (personally...the boyfriend is the electronic tech not me so that's all on him for now)
And side note....my speedo just told me as of this morning that I somehow went from 15 mph to 80 in 1 second and in a residential section...
It could also be something silly like the button on the steering wheel that activates/accel's the system might just be getting stuck... I had an El Camino that did that.
Not saying that's what it is, but something to think about.
