New ride tomorrow

Hello all,

I have yet to do much searching on this site yet, but I'm sure I will make myself at home soon.

I didn't see a member intro section so I will introduce myself and get to business really quick like.

I'm 24 in the Army stationed at Ft. Bragg as part of the 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne). I am a car project aholic. My name reflects my 1956 F-100 that I am rebuilding and if you are bored can check out the progress on another forum. It is on a Mercedes Forum but it is down due to bandwidth so I will post it over here soon.

My First car was a 1953 F-100 in highschool I partially rebuilt with my dad. I currently drive a 1983 Mercedes Diesel and a 1997 F-250 Powerstroke both of which run on Waste Vegetable Oil (Free fuel and good for the enviroment). I am a diesel nut and would never drive a gas vehicle except my urge to have another classic far outwieghts that desire. My 56 is a complete body off restoration and is going to have a twin turboed cummins diesel 4bt replacing the 5.0 HO that was in there before. Has a Twin I beam in the front and a 9" out back. It should do well.

Ok why I'm here. Tomorrow I'm buying a 1964 F-100 that can be seen here.

It looks like I will get it for about 600 bucks. He is not sure what is going on in the front end. Judging from my old truck I'm thinking King pin as I asked if it was steering box, tie rod ends, etc and he said a bit of everything so that is my guess. Also has breaks that leak off a bit apperantly...should be a fun drive home .

I'm glad I held out. If you guys are looking for trucks these things are all over the place here in Central NC. I almost bought this yesterday until finding the above find.

That and there is a great 64 F-250 flareside for a couple hundred bucks that doesn't look all the worse for wear. Looks to be a parts car but could be revived with a bit of inspiration and some elbow grease.

I was going to cut 12" out of the frame and shorten the bed to make a short bed but got lucky and found this short bed 64 that looks even better and it cheaper.

I can do OK body work and have been messing around with the Rustoleum $50 paint job lately and have had good results so I think that is what I will do with this truck. Probalby go with the red/white color combo just becuase that is what the paint comes in.

Well hopefully I get to chat with you all a lot more soon and look forward to my new truck. Something I can actually drive while I'm putting my 56 diesel power house together.

Good luck with your red headed step child. This statement will make more and more sense to you as you begin your project. Welcome.

Wink

Pilsbury....Thanks for the welcome, and Also That is thrice now I have seen the red headed stop child coment on the 64 ..hmmmm I figured they were the popular year since there are 3 of them within 60 minutes of me for sale. Yet to see any other year??? Maybe that is why they are getting rid of them. Well this probably won't be a keeper for more than a few months. Just a side project to get up and running good, and practice some of my skills. I will probably sell it before I deploy in May. My wife would get pretty mad with 3 vehicles around that I will not even be driving.

Thank you for the welcome and I will post pics to my gallery soon.

The reason for the red headed step child comes into play when you decide you want power steering, power brakes, and or drop her a few inches. There are a lot of other things but those are some major points. As you read the archives you figure out what all the major changes were that occurred in 1965. That was a major turning point in truck design for Ford in my novice opinion. I have a 64 and enjoy tinkering with it. I also have a 65 parts truck that may become more than a parts truck for the above mentioned reasons. Can't go too wrong for $600 though. Have fun.

Well,

My A-Hold boss kept me at work till 6:30 even though I aked to get off early. I told the guy I wouldn't be able to make it tonight so he ended up selling it to antoher guy that came by tonight. Guess I will have to go take a look at long bed. I think it has rust issues though. Maybe I will just have to hold out a bit longer and see if I can find another diamond in the ruff.

addicted56, Welcome to FTE the nations online truckstop for ol Ford trucks.
There is a forum for introductions https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/forum23/ in the general section.

Thanks for your service to our nation.

As noted earlier, the pre 65s are out in the dark ages when it comes to cheep upgrades to power steering and brakes. Should your plans be for slamming it might be a better choice. Good luck in your hunt.

John
