Gauges

I have a 2004 6.0L with the 6sp manual tranny. I have the Edge Evolution programmer, which gives me up to 4 PIDS, from the available EGT, Boost, Oil Temp, Water Temp, and a bunch of others I don't use. I doesn't give me transmission temperature on the manual transmission.

I had assumed that these were pretty much all I needed, until I found out (much to my disappointment in Ford) that the factory oil pressure gauge doesn't actually show oil pressure. What were they thinking???

So, I think I need an oil pressure gauge. I've heard I should also have a fuel pressure gauge, but I'm not sure about that. And I wonder if I should have a transmission temperature gauge.

So my question is, what are the best gauges to get and where? Is there some sort of electronic console that operates like the Edge does (let's me choose which values I want to see digitally on an LCD screen)? Or do I need to go with the pod style guages.

What kind of Pod do people like? I, personally, don't like the A-piller pods. It looks like I'd have to remove the grab handle to put in an A-piller pod and I use that handle. And I just really don't like the look of A-piller pods that well.

I saw a pod set that wrapped around the dash console that I liked, but it was only available up to 2003. There is a pod console that goes under the "cubby", but I had planned to put my brake controller there. I've also seen overhead pods that might work well, but how hard is it to get wires up there?

How important is Fuel Pressure and do I really need transmission temperature on a manual?

I know there are a lot of questions here. I hope I can get as much help as possible.

Thanks in advance,
David Chamberlain

I have an over the rearview mirror 3 gauge pod that's totally out of the way and as easy to read as looking in the mirror. IMHO a fuel pressure gauge is more important than the EOP gauge, but it is a matter of personal preference. I like gauges with needles because it's quicker to read than a digital readout gauge. I don't know about a temp. gauge on a manual tranny as I'd think it would depend on how large a load and how often you pull.

Was it difficult to get the wires up there? How is the pod attached to the roof? I do think this might be my best option. With a 3 gauge pod I could put in oil pressure, fuel pressure and transmission temperature.

I do hope to get a chance to tow, but I don't know when that will happen.

7-8psi is all that is needed to keep safe opperation for most engines. So anything over that was considered normal. And in fact once warmed up O/P on alot of diesel engines will run between 15-25PSI.

A O/P guage is not a bad idea just will need to be Electric as well as the F/P guage which is more important and that guage is a bit pricey. Stock vehicles can suffer from lack of F/P due to poor fuel quality and bad filters just like modded trucks.

Personally that is up to you I however like to see Guages. I have individual Autometer 2 1/16" guages the location to put them is up to you.

My cubby doesnt do anything but collect Junk so i put 2 guages in there and will get the pod that goes below that for my next set.

No, You wont work it hard enough to have to worry about temp. that is more set towards auto trans.

I have both the triple A-pillar and the one under the mirror for six total gauges. Diesel Manor has pictures of several setups to look at. You have plenty of space up front where the ceiling cover meets the winshield to run your wires. You will have to remove the A-pillar to run your wires but Diesel Manor has intructions online for that too. I ran mine from the passenger side for the mirror mount and put all the wiring boxes behind the glovebox. I am also very dissapointed that Ford put in such cheap gauges for tranny, water temp, and oil pressure. Your temp gauges in your dash are useless and by the time they say hot you are in trouble as I found out climbing a 9,000 ft mountain in California
