One of my buddies I work with has become and AMSOIL dealer...To hear from him, its the best thing since sliced bread, and he nearly has me convinced to switch. I thought I would run this past all of you here at FTE since I value and respect all your input. Could I get some of your pros and cons on this product ? I would like to know from people that have personally tried it. What can I expect for mileage ? Does it tend to "find" places to leak that Rotella doesn't? If so, ho much ? What do I need to do to make the switch ? I'm also thinking of changing coolant to a propylene glycol product ?
have been using amsoil for a few years and like it
am currently using the 3000 5w30 now has 23k mi with one filter change using amsoil filter
with 5w40 and 15w40 HD 10k mi is not a problem

Cool...Have you noticed an increase in mpg ? Power ?
i am an Amsoil 'dealer' so i could get lower prices when buying bulk for my shop and please allow me to say... they make ok oil but it is not the next best thing since sliced bread they claim it to be. Shell Rotella is excellent oil! Amsoil makes some nice tranny fluid, but for oil.... Also, you might note that some Amsoil oils ARE NOT tested and certified like the major brands (there is NO logical excuse for this no matter what they might say).
So...
Want to hear from 'experts' and those serious oil geeks... Check out Bob Is The Oil Guy discussion forum. Also NOTE that oil, no matter what any marketing arm of a company says and who or how many they may have brainwashed, there needs to be USED OIL ANALYSIS for scientific proof imo. i race cars from exotic to pure track vehicles, plus have the usual street rides. Frankly, save your $$$ on oil and get Rotella or Castrol (the GC... again see BITOG forum).
Also note that the 'best oil' may be dependant on the vehicle, your climate and usage.

Am not being argumentitive, though am curious about your statement. How do you know the oil "is not a problem"? Have you sent in a used oil sample to a testing lab?

i didnt thnk so.
ifin he did i dont think he would be useing amsoils anymores.
never noticed any difference in millage or power, engine oil stays cleaner and easier cold starts
I noticed the same thing. When I switched to Amsoil. The motorcraft 5W20 was always really black, and the Mobile 1 was also, when I changed them. The last Amsoil change the oil was still clean.
I change my oil every 3000 miles or six months which ever occurs first. I know that I'm wasting my money changing synthetics that soon, but it makes me feel better.
Does anyone know why the Rotella turns balck so quickly and the AMSOIL does not ?

changing at 3k miles with amsoil is pretty expensive,my blackstone reports have always came back good at 12k and will soon see what it will be at 23k
with motorcraft that dealer put I in never made it to 3k before truck started running bad
at 23k my oils still isn't as dirty as motorcraft at 2800 mi

I am a firm believer in synthetic oil period! Ive used it for too long and have seen first hand the benifits of the use of synthetics. On top of the fact that I have spent alot of time researching the oil. I will tread softly now when I say that of all the synthetic oil, I use and prefer the amsoil. However there are other GREAT synthetics out there that protect very well, and last alot longer than MOST of the mineral based products out there. I will agree with the fact that Rotella makes one hell of a good oil product, mineral/ or synthetic. I just prefer the synthetic, and I prefer amsoil. You can't go wrong with it. Ive been using it for a long time now, and have also been within the past two years using extended intervals aswell. But only you can decide what is best for your truck. Good luck to ya.

which type amsoil are you using and how far have you pushed the extended drain intervals
I am using series 3000 HD 5w30 and engine uses less oil than it ever has,it has always used a little oil but not a a constant rate
I pcked amsoil because it is I think the oldest maker of synthetic oil and should by now know what they are doing

I have always just used the reagular heavy duty marine/ diesel 15-40W with amsoils Ea synthetic filter. I have gone the full 25,000 mi as directed, with one oil and filter change. Didnt even blink. By that time the oil did look pretty dark, but was still shinny, and slick. I only recently switched to their 5-40W ULTRA low sulfer formula in my older DURAMAX before I sold it. I do plan on using the 5-40W in my super duty when I make the change @ 15,000mi. I have read about the 3000 HD formula and have read nothing but good things about it. Was even going to use it in my DURAMAX, but amsoil put out their ULTRA low sulfer formula for the newer fuel, so I just went with that.
