well after more research i decided to go with a 5.9 cummins instead of a 7.3 but i would like to know if the cummins will make enough vaccum for the brakes or do i need to add a pump and how much difference is the turbo charged cummins with bigger injectors and a a fuel system upgrade compared to a bored and balanced 400 with a 4 barrel carb and a edelbrock cam in the power department thanks
I recently read an article in Diesel Power where with fairly simple fuel upgrades on an older (12 valve) 5.9 they boosted HP by about 100hp and torque by about 245lb/ft. Add some exhaust/intake upgrades and I don't think a 400 could hold a candle. I own a 78 f250 supercab 4x4 that I am planning to swap a cummins 5.9 12 valve into. I think combining this engine with the older body style truck would make a great machine. Any info you guys have on gear ratios, transmissions, etc would be appreciated. Thanks alot.
Hi again. I just wanted to try and steer you in the right direction on your brakes.
Since the cummins is turbocharged, it does not make vacuum, the intake has pressure in it. There are vacuum pumps out there that could do the job. check a junk yard for older diesel trucks ( I'm talkin 1 1/2 ton and up) a lot of them had vacuum boosted hydraulic brakes. another option would be to use a hydraulic booster( run by the power steering pump) which can be found on most light duty diesel pickups. The hydraboost would be my personal choice since they are reliable and powerful, plus you will already have a power steering pump anyway. This way you don't need to figure out how to mount and drive a seperate vacuum pump. I hope this is helpful!
