This is not about changing out the current heater, so let's not go there.
The cab in my 66 has plenty of ventilation with it's rotted weatherstripping and other holes that were not there when it left the assembly plant.
I know my system is making heat, but on some cold days the competing air entering the cab is enough to have a huge effect on it's output.
I know there is a 6" fresh air inlet pipe that runs from the passenger side to the heater air box.
My thoughts are to tear into this inlet and look into modifying it to use more cab air and less outside unheated air. It is my belief that the new trucks recycle heated cab air and does not pull in fresh air.
Has anyone looked into this as an option, or has anyone come up with alternatives while retaining the existing heater.
The 61-64's recylce the air from the cab. The end of the heater box is wide open with the core exposed. That was stock from the factory. All you would need to do is make a cover plate for the kickpanel hole in your truck. You can use galvanized steel sheet metal or make a custom wooden cover if you want to add a little flare.
61 to 64 cabs using the oval vent openings also had a Fresh Air option with the delux heater of a duct and cab only door In a Tee arrangment.
The later round type cowl inlet did not.
To make it work Brother John will require some ABS sheeting and fab a tee to fit in the round opening, the have a door for can and damper for AO....Attach with Flex to the square box....Can use the unused stamping on the passenger side for a 61 to 64 air pull cable and bezel. For the door add a triangular spare form a 65 66 kick...
The truck has the triangle fresh air doors on both sides. I was just wondering how much fresh air came into the heater, and think it a little strange to be warming up more cold air if could be done without. I am getting enough fresh air in now without piping in more. lol
Just wanted to check to see how many folk had addressed the issue and what they did.
My 66 has some kind of lever connected to the cable that switches it from air to heat when I pull the **** out. I'll get a pict of it today. Never really paid much attention on the account it works real well, but here in Cali aint really getting much use Also my trip to work is 1.7 miles at 35mph so not much fresh air being "FORCED" into the cab. It like yours could use some new rubber and what not..at 65mph it wouldnt matter if the radio did work you couldn't hear the ball game. But it sure drownds out those pesky rice burner exhaust pipes as they go by
