The clutch in my 88 +200K miles, 5 speed needs replacing. It works OK around town and is smooth, but when I pull a heavy load, like pulling my boat out of the water, it slips and the throwout bearing chatters. I'm planning to get a clutch kit, take off work Friday and do it. I'll rent a transmission jack and repalce some seals (rear main, trans... while I'm at it). I'd like to have my flywheel resurfaced, but I'll be without transportation once I disassemble. I was advised by a fairly knowledgabale mechanic, to not worry about that because most of them stay smooth unless, its worn down too much and gets gouged up. I'd hate to put a new clutch in and have vibration. Anyone have advice on this?
Seriously, I can't see the point in going all the way to the clutch and not spending the $10 to get the flywheel resurfaced (sorta like why get all the way there and not change the rear main seal, but I see you are doing that). Call in some friends for a ride to your favorite machine shop (or wherever else does it).
Thanks Whittey. I appreciate the advice. I was feeling that way too. I'd rather go through a little extra trouble getting to the machine shop than alot of trouble later because of vibration in the clutch.
