We have a 91 F 250 7,3 diesel 4 wd there the gearbox went out, presume it is a E4OD. (Doorlabel says, Trans E)
And we have a engine and gearbox from a 94 mod 7,3 diesel 2 wd we like to put in it. Gearbox looks the same, 20 bolts on oil pan and 2 eletric sockets on both.
One question I have, will the transfercase on the 4 wd drive fit on the 2 wd drive gear box?
Is there other tings to look out for?
the transfer case won't bolt up to the 2wd transmission. the only option i know of for using the 2wd transmission is to go with a divorced transfer case and a small driveshaft between the transmission and transfer case. you will have to have a shop make you a new drive shaft the front and rear axles as well because the transfer case will be set farther back then it was before. you will probably need a different transfer case as well, unless there is an adapter to have a yoke on the front of the transfer case as opposed to the direct drive that it is now. check out advanced adapters for one, they make a lot of quality stuff.
you may also be able to swap tail shaft housings on the transmissions in order to bolt the transfer case up, but i am not positive, i'm no expert on the e4od transmissions.
your best bet would be to take the 4wd transmission to a shop that does rebuild exchanges and swap your burnt up transmission for a rebuilt one. it's not cheap, but it's less than a brand new transmission from ford.
hope i helped and feel free to ask anymore questions.
Anyone know if outgoing shaft from the E4OD gearbox is the same for a 2wd drive as for a 4wd?
If that was the case, we could just transfer the transfercase and x-over to the 2wd application
We just found out that the output shaft for the 2wd gearbox is 23 cm and the output shaft for the 4 wd gearbox is 15 cm. So that swap cant be done. A rebuilt E4OD over here with converter and upgrades is $ 4300. But then it should last "forever"
