I have a 2000 F150 4x4 5.4 litre Auto with Towing Package. Its got 22, 000 miles. It has the light duty automatic in it. I believe an Ao6d or something like that. Tranny shop told me it wasn't Ford's best.
I'm just now within the last two weeks been experiencing problems with the tranny when it's cold in the morning. It shudders when I start to take off. Fluid is full. It's been doing it consistently every morning since it started. I back out of the garage and it feels "wobbly". Odd description I know, but it does. Then when I shift to drive, it does it again. It almost killed the engine once. Once its warm it doesn't happen. Anyone experience this?
I'm calling the dealer today. It will be warranty work. I need some ammo/info so when I call they don't try and buffalo me. Also when I used to go up steep hills on the highway, I could control the throttle such that I could usually use the "torque Converter shift" instead of going down into third. Now it just hits into third..and kinda hard at that. Never used to be this way. I just purchased a tent trailer to pull loaded with a boat on top, etc. I don't want any troubles. Should I purchase an Extended Warranty since I'm so close to being done with the original 3 years??
Common problem, you need to have the fluid changed, Make absolute sure they use Mercon V and drain the torque converter. there is a drain for the converter. If you don't have an auxilary tranny cooler. get one installed, plate type is best. If that doesn't work you will need a converter. I replaced mine and cured all except the shudder when starting out from dead stop and my converter is making a whining noise when it's not locked. Please post your results.
It has an auxillary oil and tranny cooler which are stock. My brother said replace with Amsoil Fluids.....whadya think. Says he likes it in his PSD. Course, he's a dealer an all. Are there any tech bulletins that address this? What about extended warranty?
I see no problem with amsoil. Just replace the fluid and see if that cures the problem. I have a 4.6 in my truck and Grand Marq. both had similar problems but mostly hard shifting in and out of overdrive and shudder. I replaced the fluid and cured problems.
