well i got back in the trade, finally found a body shop that was hiring! im working at EZ Autobody here in regina, its on north winnipeg.. although im kinda doing everyting instead of painting now... still gonna do a little bit but not as much as i would like, oh well its just another step up.
are you a liscensed bodyman kirk?? or apprenticing?? good for you on getting the new job!! maybe time to collect tools for a venture into self employment...
haha for sure! but i aint cheap, because i dont shortcut / splash job things... i leave that stuff for maaco because i wanna give myself a good name! so i do the best i can and do quality work that i can atleast stand behind!
beleive it or not i was actually offered a job at maaco to make more money than EZ and i turned it down... not only because i dont wanna cheap out but because ive known the guy that runs EZ for quite a while and i know he is a picky guy and does stuff top notch!
sherm, i am "apprenticing" right now, i have all my hours to become journeyed and i just have to go for my last course and write the test for my ticket. ive had my hours for quite some time, but the previous shop i was working at was dinking around and never did fill out my forms, or give the information stating i had the hours.they were bassically lieing to me and never did want me to get become a journeyperson (they just didnt wanna pay me the going rate) so yeah thats pretty much why im not working at *cough* said shop anymore
Man Kirk that sucks about yout previous shop. Thats one thing I hate about the way the trades work, it seems like its almost always a fight to get bumped up to the next level.
if its a fixed rate trade it is hard. for those trades who charge as necessary, its good. if a person puts in an honest effort, they're worth the money to keep them. a body shop seems to be a fixed rate place with one or two papered guys and a few flunkies who are just as qualified but won't be given the opportunity to advance...much like your scenario as i see it. keep pushing kirk, you'll get it!!!
Been down that road before getting on at the hospital. One place promised me a raise after so much time in their shop. The time came and went. 3 months later asked about the pay increase. The next day they served me my shipping papers.
I got on in another shop and was being paid 25 cents above minium wage as a frame man. There were guys there for 3 years and they just got their raise of 10 cents more. Then I got hired on a the hospital.
Back then those shops required you to buy your own tools and equip. Its changed now.
sounds like the dweeb my wifey works for... she fights for her raises, luckily she gets them, he knows that he can't keep the business without her. good thing is, maternity leave will finally show him what he should be appreciating!!!
