I have searched the forums and it says that there is a circuit board under the passenger kick panel and I went to look under there but I have no idea what I am looking for or even what it looks like could someone give me some advice on this topic. The problem is when I push the 4hi nothing happens the little light doesn't come on, no little sounds nothing, it's like I never even pushed it at all. But what was kind of wierd about the whole thing was the fact that I have the shift on the fly but manual lockers?!?! Does that makes sense to anyone either? Any input on the topic is better than none, I am just kind of lost at the moment.
Probubly someone before you removed the auto lockers. (Thats a good thing) You should remove the shift motor (three bolts) and push the button. You can watch and see if the motor is turning. Start trouble shooting from there.
Okay I have another question. Would the VSS have any effect on the 4wd not working? I think that it is bad because it is shifting funny, the abs light turns on randomly for some reason, and every once in a while when just driving normally my speedo needle jumps around like crazy. Just wondering?
I have a 93 bronco that showed the problem when I got stuck in a snow bank. I push the 4X4 button and the 4X4 light comes on but is not in 4 wheel drive. While the 4X4 light is on and I'm in neutral, if I push the Low button I hear the familar clunk and I'm in 4 wheel low. If I turn the 4 wheel low off, then I'm in 4 wheel High. Press the 4X4 button again and I'm back in 2 wheel drive. This use to be easier. Any suggestions.
There is a much longer story if you want to hear it. Thanks
On my old 88' the "shift on fly" did not have anything to do with VSS. That system worked good (except for the hubs), so I dont know why they would change it. But they did change alot of things in the 96'. So I cant say for sure.
Had the same problem on my 93. Through reading some threads on here when i had the problem, it was explained that sometimes the shifter motor gets stuck and therefore will not respond, hence no light. To unstuck it, have somebody inside the truck pushing the button while somebody underneath the truck bangs on the actuator motor. I did this one time and it actually worked (ONCE). The same thing happened. I push the button but no light. Eventually i removed the actuator motor and tore into it. Turns out inside the shifter (not solenoid, but the thin, jar lid looking unit) has a screw surrounded by a plastic shrowd. When you push the 4x4 the screw and plastic peice actually move to engage the solenoid and also tells the computer when in High or Low. Over time the plastic peice deteriorates and crumbles into many little peices and the unit can not respond correctly (or at all). I went to Autozone and bought 1/4 inch rubber fuel line (i think 1/4 in) and shaped it exactly the size of the plastic shroud. I replaced it and my 4x4 hasn't failed me since. If your going to do this remember to mark the position of the gears inside the actuator motor. It will make assembley a whole lot easier
