fuel injected 4.9 and i love it to death but ever since new <10 years ago> it would idle and get very hot and im talkin 220 230 hot but then when you get it goin it cools right down to about 190 and stays even in the winter my dad says its done that eversince it was bought but i just figured you guys could gimme some info\tips

my 90 f150 300 I6 had the same problem. whenever i looked into it i found the thermostat was rusted completely shut, and my water pump went bad (since no water flow). seems the previous owner of my truck neglected to flush the radiator periodically. even though no water would flow through the motor, the thing ran alright air cooled(not recomended)

so i should just look into my thermostat?

 

it wouldn't hurt to check it. the thermostat is behind the upper hose connection to the block. also check the color of your coolant. mine was brown which helped me find the rusty thermostat. whenever you get your themostat out put it in a pot of boiling water and see if it opens. if it does not then your problem is probalbly a blocked hose or fitting. although its alongshot, check the water pump too. if it siezed then you will get no water flow, and more expensive to fix than a thermostsat.
