Rattle after warm-up

I have done several searches, but nothing seems to fit my problem. I have an '03 Explorer 4.6L with 66K miles. It has, for lack of a better description, a rattle coming from the lower rear area of the engine. The noise is evident at idle, once the engine is warm. It also occurs on the road whenever I am accelerating. It stops the second I let off the gas. The frequency, or pitch, if you like, seems to increase with acceleration as well. The exhaust system seems to be solid, as far as I can tell by trying to crawl underneath (I'm recovering from a broken leg so my mobility is limited...both by my boot cast and by my wife). Any ideas or troubleshooting suggestions will be appreciated. I'm trying to decide if this is something I need to have addressed now, or if it will wait until I'm more physically able to dig into it a bit deeper myself.

Are you sure its not engine knock? If you have preignition, it can sound like little metal ***** rolling around in a can. What octane fuel are you using.

Can you locate the noise with a stethoscope. It can be anything from a loose flex plate to a bad cat.

I empathise with you, I am just out of 3 weeks ICU, and the wife is after my a** for climbing under the truck.

Yea, I thought about that, but it's not what I think of a engine knock. Just the same, I filled up with premium today, so we'll see.

I would like to try that but, well, there's this whole wife thing... . I did check the cat, that looks OK. No loose heat shield at least. As best as I can tell it sounds like the bottom of the engine toward the rear, but we all know how sound travels in a vehicle. Could be anywhere up front.

engine noise

If it's the dual overhead cam engine the noise could be the chain.

It's a SOHC. I've read and heard a lot about timing chain problems with the 4.0L engines, but not in the 4.6L.

Don't know if this is applicable to newer Explorers, but the older ones had a metal guard over the catalytic converter that was notorious for coming loose and resonating at certain rpm's.
