help for a friend

A buddy of mine has a late 99 f350 4x4 in today he was going to pull out of his drive way and his truck acted like it was in 4low but the shifter was in 2h and than he tried to put the truck in 4low on the shifter and that worked than he tried to take it back to 2h and now its stuck in neutral. Has anyone had this problem before

thanks for any help for him

99.5 4x4 transfer cases had a very poor design in the main shaft. No lube was provided for the shift fork and it grinds itself up.
Mine gave out on the top of Mt. Rainier National Park and it cost me $550.00 to get towed home. The parts to fix it cost me $450.00.

Seems they come in waves. I just posted this thread somewhere else today too.

.
Here's the pictures of the inside and the differences between the original and the updated design.

Here you can see the new shift fork and the 180 degree plastic "bearings". They snap into the notches on the new shift fork. And the new slider with the oil galley sitting next to the old one without the oil galley.

Assembled and ready to close up.

All done.

Does the early 99's have the same lack of lub problem?

Probably. I would remove the filler plug and attempt to see what the shift fork looks like if I were you.
Let me repeat what I said about this failure after I got the truck back home.
I had no warning sounds whatsoever. No rattles, funny noises, hard shifting, nothing.
I was simply coasting back down the mountain at about 1200 rpm and the whole thing simply dropped to neutral. I had to hitchhike back up to the lodge and phone a tow truck from the middle of the park and pay through the nose to get back home.
I repeat, no warning sounds at all. It just quit and that was it.
