1978 F-150 Towing?
I have a 78 f-150 with 3/4 ton rear axle 3.73's ,NP 435,300I6,2wd,LB helper springs witha door stick says 6050GVw. a friend said she will tow every bit of a 3/4 and I'm guessing 10,000-140000lbs.I have not had any responses on the towing form so I tried here. thanks Dustin

I have a 1978 Edmund's Van, Pickup, Sport/Utility Buyer's Guide, but it dosen't give towing weight limits. But the reason I post is that it says the F250 came with a two barrel carb that year. Does yours have a two barrel? Also, the Edmunds lists the '78 F250 133" wheelbase (that would be long bed) as GVW of 6700 lbs (optional 8400) and curb weight of 4452 lbs. Of course there were exceptions and I would go with your door tag though my '95 F150 supercab (as I recall) has a 6050 GVW. With a 3.73 rear I would be able to tow about 5500 lbs with a stick. But being an F250 yours should be rated for much more towing capacity. Does your door sticker have the Gross Combined Weight Rating on the door tag? That minus the 4452 would be your max trailer weight.

Frame should be heavier on an F250 and I would expect the brakes would be bigger, clutch etc. I have specs from the Chilton Full Sized Van manual which should be about the same as the pickups. They don't show a difference for 1/2 ton vs. 3/4 ton (that I can see as I only have a photocopied page) but it lists the '78 300 I6 as a 1 barrel, 132 hp@3600 RPM, and 241 foot-lbs@1800 RPM. As long as your trailer tongue wt combined with all other stuff loaded into your truck does not exceed the 6050 you should be OK on that end, but there should be a GCWR for the total rig--maybe a call to your local Ford dealership would get you the information.

For clarification, your truck will NOT tow 14,000 lbs, unless you are making at least 500 ft/lbs of torque and having a flat torque curve(brand new Powerstroke 1 ton's won't tow that) . You can expect (this is a guess) to tow at least 5,000 to a max of 10,000 for a 400. I don't know about a 460 though, it would more than likely be around 10,000). Hope this helps.

I have to agree that 14,000 lbs is a tremendous load. These trucks will tow alot and to be fair should be compared to the smaller V8s. I've towed 8500lbs on one occassion (I didn't have my class 3 hitch back then either.) Some of the guys on this site have moved tremndous loads, but I don't think its something to do regularly.
