I have a 2004 E-350 w/ a V10. I purchased the van in June of 2005 with 25k miles on it and I currently have 76k miles. I use the van for commuting, trips, and for towing my 21' toy hauler rv to the races (about 5-6k miles/year). I like the V10 for towing but I'm wondering if the powerstroke might be better suited. Basically, I'm looking for pros/cons w/o going through every topic posted.
My RV weighs 5500# dry and is probably 6500#-7000# when loaded. My van has the taller (lower numerically) stock gearing. I don't pull in overdrive since it shifts too often. I figure OD might be fine with lower gearing. I typically pull the RV at 70mph and I don't floor it to hold that speed on the hills, so I'll let it reduce speed somewhat. I get 6-7mpg pulling the rv and it sounds like this would jump if I decreased speed. Thoughts?
Would the powerstroke hold its speed better on the hills? What kind of mileage could I expect (I'm asking on this forum cuz I feel I'll get some more truthful responses... lol).
i have a 2000 e350 w/V10 and used to pull my 30' Weekend Warrior. I would get from 7-9 mpg. If you put alot of miles a year traveling to races, i would go with the deisel. But, if you're not putting 20K miles or better, i dont think the costs are worth it IMO.... not towing iget from 16-18.... hope this helps
I can't give you any first hand knowledge on the PSD, but can tell you that there are a lot of unhappy campers out there with the 6.0.
I'm thinking you've got the 3.73 gear with the "new" (for the '04 E series) 5R110 trans.
What size tires are you running? The 3.73 with the stock 245's might struggle a bit, but anything larger would be tough.
I put 285's on my '03 (3.73 / 4R100), and I'm swaping to 4.30's next week. I just pulled a 8500# TT, and she wern't too happy about it.

As for costs, are you referring to purchase cost or maintenance costs for the diesel? I'm watching a diesel on eBay that I may be able to pick up for about the same price I got my V-10 for.
Holy cow, I can't believe you get that kind of mileage. I get around 12 around town and a best of 14 on the highway when I'm unloaded. Not sure what you're doing differently, but kudos to ya!

I'm running the stock 245's on my van. I just put some new Michelins on it and kept the stock size.
i have over 130,000 miles on my michelin LTX's and i run them at 75psi. I was referring to the cost of maint and the deisel. I roadrace motorcycles all around the country and average about 25-30K a year plus my driving for work and such.
