O.K. I have never been let down by you guys before, so lets don't start now. Here is my delima...
I have a 1979 Ford LTD Dirt Track hobby stock. Right now, it has the stock C-4 automatic with a 302 out of a 199x ford truck. The block casting is F1SE-xxxx. I know it is the 50 oz balance motor because I had to get a harmonic balancer for it and that is what I got. It doesn't vibrate or anything, so it has to be right. (that and all 302's after '81 or '82 were 50 oz balance (I think)) Anyway, I am going to put a 3 speed manual tranny in it for next year. The tranny I have came from a 1982 F-150 with a 300-6 and a "three on the tree." I need to know what flywheel I need to use that will work with that bell housing/motor combo. I think it has to be 50 oz balance, but what size clutch? Didn't all of the 300's have a 164 tooth flywheel? If so, don't I need a 164 tooth flywheel for the 302? I really want to find out as much as I can before I start buying crap I don't need. I know a 157 out of a mustang might be smaller/lighter, but I don't think there is a bell housing that will work with that tranny/flywheel, is there? I can get the #'s off the tranny and bell housing if it will help. Please let me know what my options are. Any and all advice will be appreciated!
Thanks
you need a flywheel that matches the bell. you should be able to use the 300 bell just get a 164 tooth 50oz flywheel with the same size clutch that on the 300....should be good to go.....most 50oz truck flywheels should work...
how do I know what size clutch the 300 had? It was just the trans/bell housing when I got it. Motor was long gone. I have an 86 F-150 4x4 with a 300-6 3 speed o/d and I just put a clutch in it. It was the 10" clutch. I also just put a clutch in my 92 F-150 ext. cab 4x4 with a 5.0 5 speed. It was an 11" clutch...
would the #'s off of the bell housing help?
