Hi...I am trying to interpret for my husband so if I don't make any sense please ask me questions so I can ask him * he is computer illiterate and I am trying to be his messenger.
He has a 1994 Ford F 150 4.9L Inline 6 truck with 230 thousand miles. The transmission has gone out. It is a E 4OD Electronic Shift Transmission. The wall we are running into is that a replacment is about $800.00, is there any way around this expensive transmission? The truck was originally used as a work truck and pulled a lot of weight but has now been retired and we are trying to get it running just for use as a kid's vehicle, so if a less expensive transmission would work we sure would appreciate any advice. The truck still runs like a top we are just curious if it is worth putting a $800.00 transmission in it if something cheaper would work.
Welcome to FTE! My gut opinion for you is to be happy with the 240K miles and invest the $800. If that's a quote for a rebuild, that's a fair price, just make sure that includes the torque converter and everything else -get the worst case scenario from the tranny shop and always get a second opinion when spending that much money. You could try swapping in a junkyard replacement and taking your chances how long it will last. As far as other trannies, you could go to a C4, C5, or small bell C6 -but you'd need to factor in coversion costs too. Stick with what has worked. I ended up paying $1600 for a rebuild on my C4 -talk about ouch! And just like all tranny shops, it starts out low $$ and snow *****
The $800.00 was for a junk yard tranny. The estimate from the tranny shop was $1200.00 to rebuild....which isn't an option any more because my son in an attempt to "help" left the transmission at a shop and didn't bother to go get it or tell us that he had done it .... soooooo lets just say we are starting from scratch on the transmission since we no longer even have the original.
WOW! I'm not as schooled as some in this forum on the newer trannies, but my best guess is that it will still be "easiest" to try and find an exact replacement rather than trying to convert to a different tranny or even to a manual -the computer complicates things. $800 seems a little high for a junkyard tranny, unless that includes install and towing...a lot depends on how you "feel" they can do the job confidently. I'd definetly inquire about some sort of warranty. Last thing you want to do is go through it all over again in six months. A new, rebuilt tranny will definelty cost more but maybe better for peace of mind. You can always try ebay. I found a couple here for you and your hubby to check out. Search ebay motors under parts, car & truck, "E4OD." Good Luck.
Thanks so much! You have been a huge help! We have gotten a lot of "head scratching" when trying to find out what options we have. Sure is nice to know there are people like you out there that are willing to help. GREAT SITE!
