Trans Removal & Installation?

My AOD needs rebuilding. I got a couple quotes today. Around $600 to rebuild the trans, then another $400-$700 to remove and install it. I cant really afford to have someone else remove and install it, so here's my question....

How hard of a job would this be? I only have basic mechanic skills and tools. What are the more difficult parts of this job that would make me think twice before doing it?

Also, are their any special tools required other than a transmission jack?

In other words, I need a generall idea of how hard this job would be. I have another vehicle to use as a temporary daily driver so I can take my time...

it really isnt that big of a deal, im assuming 4x4, remove the drive shafts, remove the transfer case, support the transmission with a jack or jack stands, remove most of the cross memeber bolts leave the easy ones to take out so you have something supporting the tranny, remove the inspection cover and remove the 4 torque converter nuts by spinning the enigine over by hand untill you can get to them, unhook linkage by poping out of bushing the lever doesnt come off the tranny, remove the TV cable from the shaft by the linkage, unhook neutral saftey/reverse light plug, un hook tranny cooler lines, remove bell housing bolts and cross member make sure engine is supported, remove the tranny making sure the torque converter comes with it. installtion is reverse but make sure the torque converter is all the way set if not it will tare stuff up, there are 3 shafts it has to be set on. line the studs on the torque converter up with the hole in the flex plate and push it together (easier said than done). not really a hard job just takes patience, muscle and common sence. so you dont have to remember all of this get your self a haynes book from a local auto parts store, it has step by step with some picture in it.

Before you remove anything, be sure you can reach ALL the bolts and nuts. I have seen a couple friends remove most of the bolts on the bell housing only to discover they couldn't reach 1 or two of them. And they discovered that the tranny had shifted enough that they no longer could bolt the bell housing back in place so they could at least drive it to a garage, so they were stuck, for a long time.

Rent a transmission jack, trannies are very heavy when you are laying on your back.

Mark all wires and connectors etc with a tape and notes. Take pictures.

It isn't too hard on most vehicles, but we don't know what your are driving. Assuming there isn't a lot of junk in the way, pulling the tranny is usually a 1 day deal if you take it slow. Usually the hardest part is the top bolts on the bell housing. Sometimes you have to use really long extentions and universal joints and work thru the firewall or tranny hump to get at them.
