Doesn't happen every time. But after it has set for a few days, or over night, as soon as it starts it will rev to about 2-3k, then drop to an idle. This happens pretty quick, in less than a second. Any ideas?
Mine has started that recently also. 99 F250 v10 4wd 5sp 168k. Curious to find out what is causing this. Can't be good to immediately rev a cold motor.
That was a beef I had with my 99. On cold start up it would rev to 1800-2000 and then settle down to 1200-1300 right away. It just bugged me to see it rev so high on cold start. It did it from day one and it never seemed to hurt it. I sold the truck to a friend who has it over 100,000 miles and it still uses the same 1/2 to 3/4 quart between oil changes.
I have a 2002 and it has done that same thing since day one. It does it every two to three weeks. Its does it on hot and cold days. It usually happens after the truck has sat for a few days.

Same with my 2000,from day one new, was told by 2 different dealers it is normal.

Mine has done it since new - still does it...about 2200 RPMs.
'99 model here.
I don't know whether it's normal or not, but it hasn't seemed to hurt anything. I do change the oil at 3K and use Castrol GTX 5w30 - no problems with tapping or knocking. Over 130K miles.
If it didn't do it so quickly, I wouldn't have worried about it either. But it's like starting it with the gas peddle pressed about half way down, then letting off as soon as it hits.
But it seems like I don't have the only one that does it, and the others haven't had any damage, so it must be a normal thing
