what to do
OR
177K Miles on a 2000 PSD for around $13500
I just don't know which way to go............. Both have the XLT interior, both look to be in great condition.. The PSD has the better body condition, however the V10 has a lift and nice 36"tires with aftermarket wheels. the PSD is a one owner vehicle and the V10 has had two owners, however the first was less than a year.
Weekend driver with the occasional long weekend trip. Eventual vehicle used to pull a 20-30' boat. I just don't know what to do... I have no intentions at first to drive it in the winter either and so, if/when i do buy, i'll be taking possession and then basically putting it in the garage until next April.
IMO both motors if properly maintained are equal in longevity (I know others will disagree...and that's okay).
Also you mention 'weekend use'...so it doesn't sound like you will be using it much to 'drive around town'...so MPG wise you may not enjoy the unloaded advantage of the PSD to justify the possible mechanical disadvantage of the added 100K miles on the clock for the PSD...
BUT...is $13,500 the lowest he/she will go?...have you been able to have it checked out at a mechanic?
PLUS...I think $12,500 is a tad high IMO for a 2000 V10...I'd try and work that one lower...
I like the lower mileage on that one like Matt does...BUT the ball joints may be ready to go on that one...Motorcraft makes a replacment set that is GREASABLE!!!...
So...I like the lower mileage due to the 'other' common parts on the truck that have that much less wear due to road vibrations, etc...I'd try and work the price of the V10 downward...as well as try and move the PSD downwards too...that 7.3L in that one is my favorite oil burner motor...lower power and higher MPGs...'most' simply do not need the pavement thumping output of today's modern oil burners...the 7.3L is a great compromise of power and mpg...but that extra 100K on the clock bothers me from the 'other' area standpoint on the truck...
I know I didn't 'strongly' recommend one over the other...but I'd likely push on the V10 price and go that route...

On the ball joints...yeah the diesel could need them and I would venture a guess he has done them once...more like twice already...so he may already have some greasable ones in there...
Also...my thinking is like Matt's...that once you mod something...you will NOT get back what you put in it...it is unfortunately a simple fact...
I still lean towards the V10...
One thing I forgot to mention to check...the manifold studs...there are 40 of them...and they can and have been known to shear off. You can check the drivers side rather easily...the passengers side...well that is much harder...but I would check them on the V10 as some may be missing...and if they are...well it can be an expensive fix.

Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
I just got through doing lots of research and searching for the "right" PSD Ex and one thing that I have found is that the PSD's (at least the 7.3's) are holding their value VERY well and the V10's are not (at least here on the west coast). I suspect that if you are only driving this thing on the weekends and not putting too many miles on it that the as it gets older the PSD will hold it's value significantly better than the V10.
I also agree with the others that 100K is a large difference in miles to compare the two.
You could also wait for a better deal?
I have seen several around here for sale for several months now and they have slowly been droping their price several thousands of dollars.

While i agree with others that mods to do not hold their value, as a potential buyer who is PLANNING on doing mods, adding an extra 1K to the purchase price to have it already in place is allot less costly than buying one stock and then proceeding to do the work yourself (Mods).
Anyhow, i am still tossing ideas around....
Thanks all for the replies.
Plus I just ran numbers on 'retail' price on msn autos and the V10 of that year with that many miles from Minot ND (most northern US city I could think of)...and the average 'retail' came in at $12,650 and that is with NO mods just a V10...so maybe that price isn't too far off.
The 7.3L with that many miles shows up at $14,500...
after talking (typing) this thru with you guys...I think I would opt for the mod'd one with lower miles V10...especially since YOU are PLANNING on putting on the mods at a MUCH HIGHER cost yourself!!!

Thanks for the info Joe..
NOW..... Does anyone on here live near Detroit that would want to do a visual inspection on a 2000 X V10 for me north of Detroit
... lol!!! Unfortunately with about a 10+ hr distance for myself, viewing it first hand before buying is not really an option....
I'd go with the V10. Replacing all the studs on the V10 is about a $500 job depending where you get it done. Replacing studs isn't a big deal.
