I own a 1998 expediton with the OBD2 computer.I purchased the $150 code scanner and would like to know what year f150s can I use this scanner with also.I`m looking to buy a 93-96 f150 with the 4.9 six.
Just a quick question, for the OBDII systems, there'a some soft ware that can be purchased that turns a laptop computer into code reader, you just buy tje hookup cables. Has anyone had any expereince with this type unit?
I've heard good things about the laptop scanner systems...but you have to remember that those systems are only as good as 1) the cable itself and 2) the laptop. As fast as this type of equipment becomes obsolete, ask yourself if you're going to keep that truck long enough to justify the equipment cost. Also, what can you do with the equipment after you sell the truck (to get some of the equipment investment back)? If you've got a laptop lying around that's paid for, its probably a worthwhile deal as you are only spending money for the cable. If you go this route, buy 2 cables...cause one will probably get torn up and then be unusable and if you can't find that cable guy again, your stuck with software and hardware you can't use on your truck.
Thanks, I do have a 386 laptop, that supposedly will work. My 96 Windstar had code come up and it cost me $150 for Ford to dx, so next I want to do this myself. Also interesting, the check engine came on and stayed on for about a week. I replaced the original battery just because it was 6 years old even though it was still working well and the check engine light went off. I think it was about 1 volt or so low and the computer picked that up.
