I'm new to the whole diesel line of trucks. I know dealers won't tell you what kind of MPG you will get for a diesel because it varies on the truck and how it is used. Can anyone tell what their city/highway and average MPG is on a 7.3L Power Stroke. I'm getting ready to buy one and was curious if it would be an upgrade from a 1996 Dodge Ram 1500 5.9L 360. Thanks

I have a 97 f350 CC 4wd manual get 19 mpg , with a chip and electric fans, and an 03 excursion that gets 20-22 mpg. I think both of these would rate in the highway mileage though, it is 15 miles to town and we don't drive around much once we get there, Walmart one stop shopping
Other end of the spectrum... I get 15 mpg on a good day of mixed driving and have heard of guys getting much less. Are you looking at a 4wd?, dually?, crew cab? Is it chipped?
For the past year, some 24,000 miles of city, mix, and highway driving, I average the numbers below.
City - avg 14.5, lots of hills and short trips, considered "severe duty" driving conditions
Mix - avg 15.7, city same as before plus highway at 75 mph and lots of country roads
Highway - avg 17.5, typically 75 mph on cruise and lots of country roads... best mileage is at about 65 where I can get around 20 or more
OVERALL avg = 15.24
BTW... the above values are all from anally obtained complete-and-to-the-neck fillups and hand-calculated mileage values.
Trip from Pasco WA to Tucson AZ, 1700 plus miles, effectively all hiway, 70 mph on cruise control. Canopy on, Jody Tipton chip in 80 economy mode. loaded only with about 500 pounds plus the two of us. 18.5 mpg overall, varied from 16.6 with some wind and travel over the Blue mtns to 19.5 from Salt Lake City to Tucson by way of Flagstaff. Mileage calculated by hand. Cannot trust the on-board computer calculation when using a chip or add-on program. See my signature below.

Reason: Typo
PS:
to maximize mileage, get a manual trnny, 2 wheel drive, low rear differential ratio, 1/2 ton, short body and bed. Don't know what the hell you'd do with such a truck, though. Might a well buy a VW beetle.

I seldom see any city driving around here, small towns with no stop lights mostly so I get what I consider mixed driving. Haven't done any freeway yet without the trailer but with the fewe mods I have made I have seen a solid improvement in mileage. My trailer towing improved from 11 to 12.5 mpg and my local driving went from 16.5 mpg to 18.6 mpg. When I get some more cash I want to try a chip and see if I can gain a little more, would like to make it above 20 mpg if It is possible.
So far I have changed to the AIS intake with zoodad mod, 4" exhaust and piller mount gauges.
