Yeah I know it's a loaded question but I just bought a 69-70 351W engine this weekend for my 54 F100 and it came with a C9ZP C4 trans bolted to it. Trans code says it's from a 69 Mustang...my question is about the case, is the steel case better or worse than the aluminum? I am looking at rebuilding the trans for the truck but if it's a turkey then I will get another. Thanks...
I guess that it is an FMX, in my limited knowledge of all things Ford I assumed that since it wasn't a C6 and it had the small square pan, that it was a C4. I did a quick search on FMX trannies and it seems that some folks think that they're super and some that think they aren't. If it is as beefy as some people say and I can keep it running then it sounds like it will work for me.
The 351W usually came with the FMX transmissions as did the 351M or 400W which was in Rancheros. The C4 will also bolt up to the 351W, but not the 351Cleveland. The early C4's were garbage (64-66), they also had the 1-3-2 shift pattern, which meant if you were in 1st, your next click up on the shifter would be 3rd/ Drive. For what its worth, the C4 and FMX are only as good as the rebuilder. The C6 is Fords strongest transmissions. I don't recall the C4 coming in aluminum? The casing is die cast.
A square pan and steel case is definitely an FMX. I am running that tranny behind a messaged 351C and love it. My tranny guy rebuilt it and added a shift kit. He said it was bullet proof to 450 hp.
There were two FMX's in 1969 with a C9ZP code. Look on the left side of the case for the Ford Transmission ID tag. If the code on that tag is: PHB-E, it was used on the 351W 2V's. If PHB-H...it was used on the 351W 4V's.
The C9ZP code means that the trans was originally in a Mustang.
