Which Teeth Are we Counting??

Need to order a transmission for 1978 F250 C6.

Parts house wants to know if it has 6 teeth or 8 teeth.

Plastic gear on the end of the cable has 17 teeth.

I felt of the gear on the shaft in the tailpeice and it "felt" like it had more than eight. Tough to see in there as it's still in the truck.

So which teeth are we supposed to be counting the plastic cable end teeth or the teeth on the shaft in the tailpeice??????

I don't know what rearend it has in it. Best I know it's all stock.

More than 8

I was able to position a mirror and a flashlight so I could see the spiral gear inside the tailpeice. There's more than 8 teeth on that one too. I could **** them cause the flastlight and mirror were shaking too much. :-)

I suppose from reading what I could find searching this forum I could take either transmission and calculate a different speedo cable gear and acheive the same configuration or at least close.

I couldn't find anything in Detroit Iron about the speedo gear other than one hard to see picture of the tailpeice shaft. In that picture it's hard to see but it sure looks like there's a lot more than 6 or 8 teeth.

I still can't figure out which tranny to order. If we're counting the teeth on the speedo cable gear then why isn't there an option for a tranny with 17 teeth? :-)

Photo of the shaft teeth

I took some photos of the shaft teeth. Two more in my gallery.

Anyone care to count and see what they get.

(Honestly I think there are more than 8 but this is all I can see at one time.)

I'm solving my own post here LOL

OK I worked it backwards using the online speedo tooth calculator.

Drive Gear Teeth = 8
Rear end Ration = 22j, Dana 61 = 3.07 (my truck)
Tire Height = 30
Speedo Gear Teeth should be 17 (which is my vehicle's count)

If I were to use Drive Gear Teeth = 6
Speedo Gear Teeth would be 13 which mine isn't

So there are 8 teeth in the photos.

NOW, I can go order a transmisison. Bummer it's the more expensive one.
