I have a 5.4 F-250 with single in and out 40 series flowmaster. But Iv'e noticed on my brothers 4.6 F150 same muffler his is alot louder then mine his is ran the same as mine. Also my neighbors 5.4 F150 is louder then mine and he had dual 40 series installed. I understand that the duals would be louder but is the big difference between the 4.6 and the 5.4 setup the catalytic? And would buying the Y pipe off of ebay for the 5.4 make a difference in sound? and loudness?
Any thoughts or comments would be appreciated.

The Super Duty 5.4l and 6.8l gassers from 99'-04' have a very restrictive y-pipe from the factory. There is a small section on the Y-pipe that necks down to a very small 1.5" pipe to help eliminate the exhaust flutter from the 6.8l. The 5.4l and 6.8l SD use the same exhaust.
I recommend getting a Stans or Ebay y-pipe and have it installed on your SD. The Y-pipe not only increases low end power considerably under 3k rpm it also makes the exhaust much louder as well. After changing the Y-pipe I would not be surprised if its a little too loud for you. I was very surprised about how much the exhaust note changed after I installed mine.
The F-150s have a different more free flowing y-pipe design from factory which will make them sound louder.
What is that flutter that the guy on ebay and you talk about dkf ?
Its sort of an annoying little sound that is somewhat hard for me to describe. Almost sounds like a very small exhaust leak. The 6.8l produces the flutter do to the firing order. The 5.4l doesn't suffer from flutter as far as I know. Flutter usually occurs around 2k rpm and only lasts a couple hundred rpm or so depending on load. Its somewhat subtle and is heard best when all the windows are up. My dad has the Ebay Y-pipe on his 03' 6.8l and flutter is very very minimal and hard to hear. I made a custom Y-pipe for my 04' 6.8l as well but I don't have it on anymore since I got a set of Thorley headers on. In my truck and my dads truck low end power was noticeably increased.
