My 51 f-1 has a 327 in it from prior owner, I have been keeping a look out for a 351, 302, ? not exactly sure what I want yet. I found a 352 from a 1966 ford f-100 two barral carb and oil bath filter. the owner says nothings wrong with it and it runs very well for $300.00 any comments concerning this engine, issues with putting it in my 51? what kind of upgrades could one acheive with this engine? is the 351 more universal?
The 351 W has more aftermarket support. The 352 is in the FE family, and is a good engine, but is much harder to find parts for. They are out there, but you'll have to beat the bushes. The worst thing I know about the 352's is they were bad about cracking manifolds. I would rather have a 351 W for my taste, but the 352 has nostalgia! They look kind of cool. Either would bolt in with no major problems? I'm not sure about the 352, as I don't know much about them. I have a buddy who has a VERY low milage 58 T-bird with a 352. I think it has a FMX trans in it?
I just had 6 years of experience with a bone stock 2 bbl '67 352. Ran very well and was very reliable. Rated at about 210 H.P.
It was also a big ol boat anchor. FE Owners are generally like Y-Block or Flathead folks. They have a passion for them. If you don't, I'd consider a 351 Windsor or something similar.
Performance wise, FEs are very parts swap friendly, but most agree the 352 is not as good of a starting point as a 390. You can upgrade to 390 but it's a total rebuild.
That being said, a strong FE with Aluminum Intake, Cobra Jet Heads and Cast Iron Headers is a wonderful, wonderful thing.
thanks for the information, I will probably just keep my eyes open for a cheap vehicle that has a 351 c or w with ac, power etc and then I can take everything i could possibly use from it then scrap the rest, something like a 70s Ranchero, torino, LTD? or ? maybe even an old chrysler, lincoln, or mercury?
I wish I hadn't sold my 74 ford ranchero with 351 c w/ c6 about 12 years ago, oh well!
There is nothing wrong with a good running 352(FE) This will most likely upset some but proportionally they look more at home in the F1 or F100 than a small block does. Nothing wrong with the small block have had plenty of them in a string of mustangs that I have owned. I even had a 289 in a '64 Galaxie, now that looked funny in the big engine compartment. $300.00 for a good runner is cheap especially if that includes all components and a transmission?
