I have a 78 f100 with the 351m and c6 auto trans, well the 351m isnt in as good of shape as the rest of my truck. And I have found a 351c for a steal of a price will the motor be a direct swap or what will need to be changed. I have done a search on here and came up pretty empty, so if some one could help let me know asap. Thanks for your time every one.
If the motor is a 351C (make sure it is before you buy they look almost identical to the 351M/400) you will need new motor mounts and a new transmission. The 351M/400 have unique motor mounts and share a bellhousing pattern with 429/460, the 351C uses small block motor mounts and bellhousing. The 351M and 351C have a lot in common but do not readily interchange with one and other. I am not sure if your accesories will work either. You could also try the engine swap fourm if you don't find what you need here.

Johnboy's info is good, as for accessories, the a/c compressor and obviously alternator are the same, the p/s pump is different and ALL the brackets are different, since they all mount to the water pump (same) and heads and M's have higher deck heights, the holes on the C are too low to line up. If your bargain C has the brackets available, grab 'em!
You can use 302 mounts for the same year truck with your M perches and as Johnboy said, you'll need a 260/289/302/351W pattern tranny to bolt to the C. My '78 F-150 has that combo, as do several other (more experienced) listers. FYI, use your electronic ignition from the M in the C and simplify both the install and future tune ups. One last thing, my I put my M oil pan under the C and it was REALLY close to the crossmember, so I have some hillbilly engineered shims between my perches and mounts to lift the motor up (see my gallery), otherwise it's really not a bad swap.
great info thanks, I can get the whole engine with all brackets etc attached the only thing missing is the carb. I can get the whole engine for $200.00 I fired it up right before the carb was removed and it ran really well. I think for the price I may jump on it and do the swap.
Firsat off, You have a heck of a deal on that Cleveland. Is it a 2v or 4v ? Either way it's a good deal. Personally I found the FMX trans to work out great on the " C's " . If I had any advice on the Clevelands it would be this, They love lots of air. The valves, both intake and exhaust are pretty large. Second the cylinder walls are thin on those so keep boring or honing too a minimum or you could crack a cylinder wall. and third the top end did not recieve alot of oil ( lifter gallery ) what I ended up doing was attaching a spacer plate to the oil filter and running steel line from that to the intake where I drilled an access port. This afforded me alot more lubrication. A good tip esspecialy when you have hydraulic lfters and high RPMs .
P.S . If the engine has stock heads have them magnafluxed for cracks. This may save you from alot of head aches in the future.
P.S.S The stock exhaust manifolds cracked easily on those as well. I would just buy some tube headers and once again save your self from the heartache, and the annoying whistle sound.
thanks for the info, its a 2v but its in great running shape and has a tad under 100k on it. I think I am gonna get it I am just looking at what the other stuff I need will cost me in the end ie transmission etc...
